WiFi 6E. Opening up the 6 GHz band for unlicensed WiFi use
I shouldn't have worried, because Asus has launched a new WiFi 6 router that's quickly become my new favorite. They're WiFi 6-enabled mesh router systems with enough power to satisfy even the most bandwidth-hungry homes. The units themselves are unassuming and blend nicely with decor though the winner of the "I might as well just leave it out on the counter" design award still goes to Google Nest. They have a slight metallic finish and a status LED that can be disabled if you prefer.
As is the trend with most WiFi 6 mesh systems, they come in a two pack since two units is more than enough to cover up to 5, square feet of space. It might not be the "plug and play" of the AmpliFi Alienbut Asus' networking app is a breath of fresh air after the "plug and go get a coffee" experience of the Netgear Orbi app. Setup took around ten minutes and that was with me going slow and taking screenshots.
Once in, it was a simple thing to see what was connected, how things were performing, and set some basic parental controls. You can also see real time traffic, perform network diagnostics, and pair your system with other Asus routers to extend your network. You can also activate Asus' AIProtection which protects your network from security events. Unfortunately, you can't review historical data on what's been blocked, like you can with Plume.
But that's comparing apples with oranges. For basic network management and monitoring, the Asus app gets the job done and easily outperforms the only other system that can touch it, performance-wise. In a word, brilliantly. Walking through my house, all the way to the back office, I consistently registered a network speed of over Mbps, and was able to reach my full network speed of Mbps in several spots.
But power isn't the only part of the equation. There were a few hiccups. If I sat in an area where the signal from the router and the mesh point overlapped, My phone would effectively lose my connection to the network briefly while they fought over who would provide service to it. I also noticed that the system would occasionally flake out, running slower or not delivering signal to all my devices.
A reboot would take care of this and I noticed that there is an option to schedule regular reboots in the Asus app.
WiFi 6E Could Be the Answer to Your Internet Signal Struggles
However, it's a decidedly old-school approach to network health management, akin to blowing on the cartridge to get your Nintendo game to work.
It would be nice if the system was able to take care of tasks like this without me having to intervene.
That said, once regular reboots were scheduled, the system performed more consistently and delivered the kind of power to my network that I was able to achieve previously with much more expensive systems.Wi-Fi 6E has dawned! However, what really matters is how it benefits heavy Wi-Fi consumers — my daughter is a prime example: My soon to be a teenager daughter, is hyper connected — to put it mildly.
She spends enormous amount of time connected to the Internet. Finally, of course, she consumes quite a few hours of entertainment a week. For her and her generation, Wi-Fi is Internet! So while the last time Wi-Fi spectrum expanded almost years ago with 5 GHz, the scale of this expansion is enormous — a full 1. Such bandwidth can unlock a many more potential applications:. But I am excited that we are taking the right steps to unleash next generation potential for next generation of consumers — my daughter, her friends, her kids, and so on.
So while may be remembered for years as the year of disrupted lives due to COVID, at some point, my hope is we also talk about as the year of positive impact on lives, due to Wi-Fi 6E.
